Patrice Rushen is not only an outstanding singer/songwriter, she also did all of the arranging and production work on this 1982 masterpiece. Alors on dit Madame Patrice. (yeah, it sounds kinda funny in French)

Of course most people under 30 likely know this tune only from the Will Smith samples, which is fine I guess — except the original has a way better bass line

Since I’m in Switzerland, here’s a taste of what was going down in Montreux 10 years ago. Hopefully I’ll get to check it out this year.

Tower of Power is an appropriate name — they still got all their groove left in them after all those years.

While I was searching for this video I stumbled upon this guy. Not only is he pretty damn good, I love how the vid truly makes those bass lines stand out.

Starship Edelweiss

C’est aujourd’hui le grand depart. Je vole sur Swiss en classe cargo (c’est trop pres, l’Europe?), a.k.a. “Starship Edelweiss”. Okay, peut etre pas litteralement. N’empeche, je vais faire au moins une heureuse et continuer la “mood-adaptive playlist” (c’est un nom genial, et j’attends la tienne?). Evidemment, comme c’est moi, ca sera pas super serieux. Esperons que les suisses ne lisent pas ca ou qu’ils aient un sens de l’humour tres… neutre.

Ca c’etait l’originale. Tristounet, non?
Heureusement qu’il y a un remix nettement plus… disons… flyé

My full time employment with this company started on July 17, 2006. But I started sort of part time exactly two years ago, on June 20th.

There would be a lot to tell, but I’ll just go with the top 5 funny/awkward moments I can think of off the top of my head:

Receiving an e-mail addressed to “Scoot” (Scott). We still call him Scoot to tease him.
My manager sending an invite to a “Lick-off meeting” for a big project
Having a developer tell us “I’m having trouble finding my way in the back-end” in a design meeting
Being asked “What did Jesus say?” by a coworker (about a customer in Latin America named Jesus — but my coworker pronounced ‘Jesus’ the English way)
Having this huge Dominican guy tell me in broken, heavily accented English “we have to solve problema soon, or you do not go back to Canada next week.” Yeah, we solved it.

Je sais, c’est l’inverse qu’on dit en général (vous pouvez checker sur platitudopédia), mais c’est bien comme ça que je l’entends. J’ai passé 4 ans en Europe, dans de très bonnes conditions qui plus est — les fameuses “meilleures années de la vie” d’après les experts. Mais je n’ai tout simplement pas accroché. Pourquoi, comment, c’est une longue histoire et ça mériterait bien un article dédié (et des compétences de psy qui me font bien défaut), mais le fond de l’affaire c’est que j’ai découvert, quelque part entre 2000 et 2004, qu’il ne suffit pas d’un passeport pour se sentir bien, pour se sentir chez soi. Il ne suffit même pas d’avoir grandi et passé 13 ans sur un bout de volcan, si sympathique soit-il, d’ailleurs. Je sais maintenant que le sentiment d’appartenance, le c’est chez moi ici peut s’acquérir. Eh oui, c’est le montréalais épanoui qui vous parle là. Oh peuchère.
